The Field Grade Mule is perfect for road use and light to moderate off-road use. It rides on a traditional leaf-spring suspension with a straight Dexter axle with 10-3/4 inches of ground clearance.
TRAIL GRADE
While still a pleasure to pull on the road, the Trail Grade Mule allows loads to be pulled into more difficult terrain. With a Dexter Torflex Axle and 235/75-15 radials, the Trail Grade has just over 16 inches of center axle ground clearance.
the differences
Below are the item by item differences between the Trail and Field Grades
COUPLER
FIELD GRADE
The Field Grade sports the old, reliable steel coupler for a 2" ball which is welded to the trailer's tongue and painted.
TRAIL GRADE
Our Trail Grade Mule's uses a slightly different coupler. It also fits a 2" ball, but it is welded to a "sleeve" tube which slides over and bolts through the tongue (with 2 Grade 8 bolts). This allows Trail Grade owners to select optional coupling systems such as lunnete rings and pintle hitches, surge couplers and bulldog couplers (see options page).
jACK
FIELD GRADE
2000# Swing-away jack with mounting plate welded to the tongue.
TRAIL GRADE
2000# Swing-away jack with mounting plate welded to square tubing sleeve, making the jack removable or it's position adjustable.
EXTERNAL CARGO AREA
FIELD GRADE
The External cargo hold allows for out of bed storage and features almost limitless tie-down possibilities. Five of the steel "U" shaped welded on tie-downs are accessible as well as 14 hook restraints along the front skirts and hook bars on the front of the frame.
Trail Grade
The Trail Grade Mule has the same style External Cargo Hold, however, 4 inches of length has been added to allow for more gear capacity.
fenders
FIELD GRADE
Jeep Style steel fenders mounted to two 1/4 inch thick fender supports secured with 4 Stainless Steel bolts.
TRAIL GRADE
Custom Jeep Style steel fenders with welded on 1/4 inch thick steel support straps secured with 4 bolts.
AXLE
FIELD GRADE
The Field Grade uses a conventional solid tubular Dexter axle with leaf Springs. The Axle is rated at a ton which allows 1,200 pound of cargo to be hauled. Higher capacity axles are available.
tRAIL gRADE
The Trail Grade uses Dexter's Torflex torsion axle. A link to Dexter's information video on this axle can be found on the Specs and Pricing page of our website. The torsion axle gives greater ground clearance and, in my opinion, a smoother ride. It also carries a five year warranty.
